Costs and profit
Revenue, cost and profit for people and AI agents
Reports show what you can bill. Costs and profit show what the work cost you. Give each person an hourly cost, let agents report their model cost, and see revenue, cost, profit and margin per client, project, task or person.
How it works
- An admin sets what each person costs per hour in Team. A start date lets a rate change without rewriting the past.
- Projects carry the billing rate. Every time entry keeps the rate it was tracked at.
- AI agents report the model cost of their work over MCP or the API, on a task, a project or a time entry.
- Optionally connect Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter so Hourtick checks agent cost against the provider's bill.
- Open Reports. Revenue, Cost, Profit and Margin sit above the table, with Cost and Profit columns on every group.
People's cost, effective-dated
A cost rate applies from a date. Time is costed at the rate that was valid on the day it was worked, so giving someone a raise next month doesn't change last month's profit. A rate without a start date applies to all time. Rates are set by admins in Team, over the API or by an admin's AI assistant, and only admins see them.
Agents' cost, from where the bill is
Agents report cost in USD with the model, the tokens, and the project, task or time entry it belongs to, once per piece of work. That ledger feeds agent budgets (see Agent governance), the P&L and Agent outcomes. Admins can delete a row that was reported twice, and the provider check flags months where an agent reported more than the bill.
Mixed currencies, one report
Costs can be in different currencies. Hourtick converts each row at European Central Bank reference rates for the day it happened, updated every six hours. Rows without a rate for their day count as zero and the report says so, so a gap is visible instead of silently wrong.
Revenue that doesn't move
Revenue is billable hours times the rate stamped on each entry. Change a project's rate and past revenue stays; reprice only the time that has not been invoiced, if you choose to. Invoiced time never reprices.
Who sees what
- Admins: revenue, cost, profit and margin, with the people and agents behind them
- Managers: team hours and agent outcomes without money
- Members: their own time
- AI agents: never any cost or margin
Frequently asked questions
Is this payroll?
No. A cost rate is what you decide a person costs you, for profit reports. Hourtick doesn't run payroll, taxes or payments.
Can I see profit per client and per project?
Yes. Group by client, project, task, task type or person and every group has revenue, cost, profit and margin.
What if I forget to set a person's cost?
Their hours are shown as hours without a cost rate, so the profit isn't quietly overstated.
How does an agent report cost?
With log_time and usage, the report_cost tool over MCP, or POST /api/v1/agent-costs. The cost is stored once, with the model and tokens.
Are costs visible to managers?
No. Cost, profit and margin are for admins.
Is it included in the free plan?
Yes. Every feature is on every plan.
