API and MCP
A time tracking API and MCP server, free for everyone
Everything in Hourtick is also in a documented REST API and an MCP server: tasks, time, projects, reports, chat and agents. Use a token from a script, or let Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Grok, Cursor and others connect by signing in.
How it works
- Create a personal API token in Settings → API tokens. Copy it once; Hourtick only stores a hash.
- Try the endpoints in the browser at /developers/playground, generated from the OpenAPI spec.
- Call the REST API with Authorization: Bearer ht_… from a script, a Zap or a spreadsheet.
- Connect an AI app to https://hourtick.com/api/mcp. Claude.ai and ChatGPT sign in with OAuth; coding agents take a token.
- Ask it for something real: start a timer, fill your timesheet, summarize last month for a client.
A REST API that matches the app
- Tasks with subtasks, dependencies, comments, checklists and files
- Time entries, timers, projects, clients, task types and cost rates
- Reports, including agent outcomes, cost reconciliation and client AI work reports
- Notes and files on projects and clients, with Markdown for notes
- Chat, search, presence and usage
- An OpenAPI spec, generated from the same schemas the server checks, and a playground to try it
An MCP server your AI can sign in to
The Model Context Protocol is the open standard AI apps use to talk to tools. Hourtick's server runs over streamable HTTP and supports the current OAuth 2.1 authorization flow with PKCE and Client ID Metadata Documents, so Claude.ai, ChatGPT and other apps connect by signing in, with no copying of tokens. Connected apps are listed in Settings, and disconnecting one stops it immediately.
Hourtick is also packaged as a plugin for the ChatGPT and Codex directory and the Grok Build marketplace, and has a publisher presence for Cursor.
What an assistant can do
- Start and stop timers, log time and list your entries
- Read reports and answer "what can we bill Acme this month?"
- Create, update and comment on tasks, and read and post in chat
- Draft your timesheet from your day (see AI timesheet)
- Work with notes and files on projects and clients
- As an agent: take work, ask questions, hand parts to other agents and log billable time
Safe by default
A personal token acts as you, in your workspace, with your role, and nothing more. Agents are limited to what an ordinary member can do and can be scoped further (see Agent governance). Every tool declares whether it only reads, writes or reaches outside Hourtick, so apps can ask before they act. Revoke a token or disconnect an app and it stops working at once.
Setup guides for every AI app
There's a step-by-step guide for each app, sorted by where it runs: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Grok Build and Muse Code on your computer; Grok Team Bots, Muse agents, Cursor cloud agents and OpenAI dots in the cloud; and Claude.ai, ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot in a chat. Or paste the install prompt into your AI and let it set itself up.
Frequently asked questions
Is the API free?
Yes, on every plan. API and MCP traffic counts toward the workspace's monthly usage, which is 500 MB free.
How do I authenticate?
With a personal API token as a Bearer token, or with OAuth for AI assistants. A token acts as you, with your role.
Which MCP clients work?
Any that speak MCP over streamable HTTP, including Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Grok Build, Muse Code, Cursor and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Stdio-only clients can use mcp-remote.
Do you have webhooks?
For agents, yes: a signed webhook starts an agent when work arrives. For other automation, use Zapier or Make (coming soon) or poll the API.
Can ChatGPT write to Hourtick?
Yes, on ChatGPT plans where OpenAI allows write actions from custom apps (Business, Enterprise and Edu). Reading works on more plans.
Is there an OpenAPI spec?
Yes, linked from /developers, with a playground to try every endpoint.
More features
Integrations
Link tasks to Linear, Notion, Teamwork and Asana, and the tracked time follows.
AI agents
Give an agent a seat on the team. It takes tasks, asks when stuck and logs billable time of its own.
AI timesheet
Ask your AI assistant to fill the hours you forgot, from what you did in Hourtick. You confirm.
Agent governance
Scope agents to clients and projects, make them read-only, cap budgets and see an activity log.
Workspaces and data
Roles, several workspaces, EU data, a choice of EU or US file storage and no surveillance.
Mac menu bar timer
The running time next to your Mac clock. Start, stop and switch without opening a browser.
Track your first hour in a minute.
Free for your whole team, forever. $29/month when you need 5 GB.
