How to fill out a timesheet correctly

Timesheets are only useful if they're accurate. Here's how to fill one out properly, and the mistakes that cause most corrections.

Step by step

  1. Check the week and your name.
  2. Add a row for each project or client you worked on.
  3. Enter time per day — decimals or H:MM, as your company requires.
  4. Add short notes describing the work.
  5. Check daily totals against your working hours.
  6. Submit before the deadline.

Common mistakes

  • Estimating at the end of the week
  • Putting everything on one generic project
  • Mixing up decimal and minutes (1.30 is not 1 h 30 min — it's 1 h 18 min)
  • Editing after approval
