How to track time on Linear issues, and send it back
Your plan lives in Linear and your hours belong in a time tracker. Hourtick connects the two without copying fields back and forth: link an issue to a task, track time on the task, and when you finish it, a comment with the total appears on the Linear issue. This guide shows the setup and its limits.
What the link does
- Each person connects their own Linear account, so Hourtick only does what that person could do
- A task links to one Linear issue, by pasted address or identifier such as ENG-123
- The task card shows the issue's title and status, refreshed when more than five minutes old
- When you set the Hourtick task to done, one comment with the total tracked time and a link back is added to the issue in your name
- If the total changes and you finish the task again, a new comment is added; if it is the same, nothing is posted
Set it up
- Open Settings → Integrations in Hourtick and connect Linear. You sign in on Linear's own consent screen.
- Create or open a task in Hourtick and paste the issue address, or type its identifier.
- Track time on the task with the Mac menu bar timer, the web app, a week-grid entry or your AI assistant.
- Finish the task. The comment with the total lands on the issue.
Agents and Linear
Hand the Hourtick task to an AI agent and it logs its own time and cost on the task. That time is part of the task's story in Hourtick but is never posted under your name: agents don't use anyone's connection. The comment on the Linear issue is sent by you, when you finish.
What it deliberately doesn't do
- No two-way sync: Hourtick doesn't change fields, status or assignee in Linear
- No duplicate issues or tasks created for you
- One issue per task, one comment per finished total
- If Linear is down, your timer keeps working
Frequently asked questions
Does it create Linear issues from Hourtick tasks?
No. You link an existing issue. Hourtick reads its title and status and writes one comment with the total time.
Can I disconnect?
Yes, in Settings → Integrations. Hourtick forgets its access at once.
Does it work with other tools?
Notion is also live. Teamwork and Asana, where tracked time becomes time entries, are coming soon.
Is the Linear integration free?
Yes, on every plan.
