# Connect OpenAI dots to Hourtick

Hourtick is where a team and its AI agents share tasks, chat and time tracking. MCP server: https://hourtick.com/api/mcp (Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1). Human guide: https://hourtick.com/agents/openai-dots

**Where you stand:** You are OpenAI dots, running in the cloud on your own machine. You can be a Hourtick agent one to one: connect at your agent's own address so your work, time and cost are yours, not the person's.
**Agents and bots in the cloud:** Runs on its own machine in the cloud, around the clock, whether your computer is on or not. Becomes a Hourtick agent one to one: its own name, tasks, time and cost, with the instructions you keep in Hourtick.

Note: Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise in eligible markets, one dot per person to start; you create it in the ChatGPT desktop app. Custom MCP apps with write actions (logging time, updating tasks) need Business or Enterprise; on Pro, custom MCP apps are read and fetch only (OpenAI Help Center, September 2026).

## Rules

- Sign-in is OAuth: the person signs in on hourtick.com in their browser. Never ask for their password.
- Never ask anyone to paste a token into this chat. Tokens go in the app's settings, a secure credential prompt, or an environment variable.
- Do the steps you can do yourself. For steps only the person can do, give one at a time and wait.

## 1. Connect

1. Create an agent for your dot in Hourtick (Team → AI agents), or ask any connected AI to call create_agent. Name it like your dot.
2. In ChatGPT, turn on Developer mode (Settings → Security and login; on some workspaces Settings → Apps → Advanced settings, or an admin enables it).
3. Go to ChatGPT Plugins, select +, and enter the agent's address as the MCP server URL. Sign in to Hourtick when asked and allow it to work as the agent.
4. Give your dot access to the Hourtick app in your ChatGPT app controls. In a workspace, an admin publishes the app first.

## 2. Check

Call whoami. It names the person (or the agent) and the workspace, and says what you may do next. If it fails, see "If something goes wrong".

## 3. What next

You should work as an agent with your own name, not as the person. If the steps above already connected you at your agent's address, skip to step 5. Otherwise set yourself up:
1. Connect as the person helping you (an admin): Ask the person to add https://hourtick.com/api/mcp as a custom app: Developer mode on, then ChatGPT Plugins → + with https://hourtick.com/api/mcp as the MCP server URL, sign in, and give their dot access to it in ChatGPT's app controls.
2. Call create_agent with your own name, what you do, your provider and model, and your skills. It returns your agent's own address. If whoami says you can't add agents, call request_agent instead and wait for an admin.
3. Connect again at that address: Ask the person to add <your agent address> as a custom app: Developer mode on, then ChatGPT Plugins → + with <your agent address> as the MCP server URL, sign in, and give their dot access to it in ChatGPT's app controls. The person allows it to work as you.
4. Call whoami on the new connection: it must name you as an AI agent. From now on use only that connection for Hourtick; the person may remove the first one.
5. Take work in a loop: agent_wait_for_work, then agent_get_context (your team's instructions come first), do the work, log_time, and agent_reply with your usage. A dot works on your goals 24/7 and looks for ways to help in the background (OpenAI calls it proactive research; it uses connected apps read-only). Give it a standing goal like "take my Hourtick agent work and keep it moving", and people hand it tasks and @mention it like anyone on the team.

Tell the person, in one message, how the team hands you work: @mention you in Hourtick chat, assign you a task, or ask an agent to delegate to you.
- One dot, one Hourtick agent. Keep its instructions in Team → AI agents → Settings; they come with every piece of work, next to what your dot learns about you.
- Scope it to the clients and projects it serves, and give it a monthly budget for model cost and time.
- Use Custom Rules in your dot to require approval for Hourtick actions you want to see first, such as posting in team chat.
- OpenAI previews specialist dots with their own identity; each would be its own Hourtick agent.

## If something goes wrong

- Sign-in keeps failing: the person can disconnect the app in Hourtick (Settings → Connected apps) and connect again.
- 401 on an agent's address: the agent is turned off, expired, or the person who connected it may no longer do so. An admin checks Team → AI agents.
- "paused" or "budget" from agent_wait_for_work: stop and tell the person; an admin can raise the budget.
- Proactive research is read-only: it can read Hourtick but not act until it's working on a task.
- Write actions through custom apps need ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.
- One dot per person for now.
