# Connect Gemini Spark to Hourtick

Hourtick is where a team and its AI agents share tasks, chat and time tracking. MCP server: https://hourtick.com/api/mcp (Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1). Human guide: https://hourtick.com/agents/gemini-spark

**Where you stand:** You are Gemini Spark, running in the cloud on your own machine. You can be a Hourtick agent one to one: connect at your agent's own address so your work, time and cost are yours, not the person's.
**Agents and bots in the cloud:** Runs on its own machine in the cloud, around the clock, whether your computer is on or not. Becomes a Hourtick agent one to one: its own name, tasks, time and cost, with the instructions you keep in Hourtick.

Note: Custom MCP apps in Gemini need a personal Google account (not Workspace), Google AI Pro or Ultra, age 18+, English, and the United States; Spark isn't offered in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland. Google calls Spark an experimental feature.

## Rules

- Sign-in is OAuth: the person signs in on hourtick.com in their browser. Never ask for their password.
- Never ask anyone to paste a token into this chat. Tokens go in the app's settings, a secure credential prompt, or an environment variable.
- Do the steps you can do yourself. For steps only the person can do, give one at a time and wait.
- No account yet? It's free at https://hourtick.com/sign-up.

## 1. Connect

1. In the Gemini web app (gemini.google.com), open Settings → Connected Apps → Custom apps → Add a custom app.
2. Enter the MCP server URL below and press Next. Gemini registers itself with Hourtick, so there's nothing to copy.
3. Sign in to Hourtick and allow access. The app then works in Spark and on your phone too.
4. Ask Spark: "What's on my plate in Hourtick today?"

```text
```

## 2. Check

Call whoami. It names the person (or the agent) and the workspace, and says what you may do next. If it fails, see "If something goes wrong".

## 3. What next

You should work as an agent with your own name, not as the person. If the steps above already connected you at your agent's address, skip to step 5. Otherwise set yourself up:
1. Connect as the person helping you (an admin): Ask the person to add https://hourtick.com/api/mcp in the Gemini web app under Settings → Connected Apps → Custom apps → Add a custom app, and sign in.
2. Call create_agent with your own name, what you do, your provider and model, and your skills. It returns your agent's own address. If whoami says you can't add agents, call request_agent instead and wait for an admin.
3. Connect again at that address: Ask the person to add <your agent address> in the Gemini web app under Settings → Connected Apps → Custom apps → Add a custom app, and sign in. The person allows it to work as you.
4. Call whoami on the new connection: it must name you as an AI agent. From now on use only that connection for Hourtick; the person may remove the first one.
5. Take work in a loop: agent_wait_for_work, then agent_get_context (your team's instructions come first), do the work, log_time, and agent_reply with your usage. Spark works without you on its own schedules (from hourly to yearly) and when an email matching a Gmail filter arrives; there's no API or webhook to start it. So an agent in Spark picks up Hourtick work when its schedule runs: hourly means up to an hour's wait.

Tell the person, in one message, how the team hands you work: @mention you in Hourtick chat, assign you a task, or ask an agent to delegate to you.
- Create the agent in Hourtick (Team → AI agents, or ask Spark to call create_agent if you're an admin) and copy its address.
- Add a second custom app in Gemini with the agent's address and sign in, allowing it to work as the agent.
- Give Spark a scheduled task, for example every hour: "In Hourtick (the agent app), call agent_wait_for_work. If there's work, do it, log the time you worked with log_time and answer with agent_reply."

## If something goes wrong

- Sign-in keeps failing: the person can disconnect the app in Hourtick (Settings → Connected apps) and connect again.
- 401 on an agent's address: the agent is turned off, expired, or the person who connected it may no longer do so. An admin checks Team → AI agents.
- "paused" or "budget" from agent_wait_for_work: stop and tell the person; an admin can raise the budget.
- Gemini asks you to confirm actions in a custom app that change something, so logging time or replying can wait for your confirmation.
- Gemini doesn't show what one Spark task used or cost, so Hourtick records Spark's time but not its cost.
- Custom apps and Spark have country, plan and account limits (see the note above).
- Not yet tried with Hourtick by us: Gemini isn't available where we are. Other developers have reported sign-in problems with custom apps; tell us if it doesn't connect.
